About hospital

Republican Vilnius university hospital is a non-profit organization bringing together clinical practice, research, education. Hospital was established in October 11th 1991 as an emergency hospital. Every year we have about 78 percent emergency patients.
With a staff of 330 doctors, 640 nurses and 399 other personnel more than 30,000 patients a year are admitted and treated in 770 bed in-patient department, while an additional 137,000 are seen on an outpatient basis. Last year the hospital performed more than 18,000 surgical procedures.
It is the biggest emergency health care hospital in Lithuania and the second largest hospital in capital Vilnius where are working 6 Professors and 28 MD. PhD. Doctors, the most professional specialists in our country, some of them are well known all over the world.
The main fields – Orthopedics and traumatology, Neurosurgery and Neurology, Toxicology, Urology, Surgery, Emergency/Intensive Care.

The hospital is a research and training base for Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine and Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. It provides a base for undergraduate/postgraduate studies and allows residents to acquire knowledge, helps health care specialists to develop qualifications.
Here are located 5 centers which are shared with Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine:

  • Center of Anesthesiology, Intensive care and critical care has two departments: Intensive care and Operating and Anesthesiology department.
  • Toxicology center contains toxicology unit and intensive care department where heavily intoxicated patients are being treated and consulted.
  • General Surgery center includes Surgery, Chest Surgery, Gynecology, Urology departments.
  • Neurovascular Surgery center is composed of several departments: Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery, I and II Neurology and Cerebrovascular disorders, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology. Center collaborates with Kaunas Technology University, Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Helsinki (Finland) and Tartu (Estonia) Universities. On the 1st of January 2014 Acute stroke treatment center was opened, it provides centralized, qualified treatment for acute stroke patients.
  • Orthopedics and traumatology center includes Orthopedic, Traumatology, Thermal injuries, Day surgery, Arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine, Plastic surgery departments.
